Photonics and advanced communications, key topics at the international InnoDay event by Innova IRV
- Roberto Viola, Director General of DG Connect at the European Commission in Brussels, and José Capmany, top academic and entrepreneurial leader in the world of photonics, took part in this event celebrated at Link by UMA
- Throughout 2023, Innova IRV has brought together over 200 collaborators and participants in three different events covering enabling digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and advanced communications
- At the event, Capmany announced that Málaga will be hosting the European Conference on Optical Communication in 2026, the second most important conference in the field. The last edition in Spain was held in Valencia in 2015
Photonics and advanced communications were the key topics at the third international InnoDay event organised by Fundación Instituto Ricardo Valle de Innovación (Innova IRV), which was held on 11 October at Link by UMA, located in the expansion area of the Teatinos university campus.
Throughout this year, these events have brought together over 200 collaborators and participants in the business, academic and institutional fields at a national level. Innova IRV has thus revitalised their areas of work such as microelectronics, artificial intelligence, advanced communications and cybersecurity in very different fields, including connected vehicles, aerospace systems, digital health, circular economy, food tech and industry 4.0.
José Manuel Leceta, Director General of Innova IRV, and Javier López, vice rector of Business, Territory and Digital Transformation at the University of Málaga and vice president of Innova IRV, welcomed the attendees and pointed out that “with this event, Innova IRV has reached another goal, going from a local and national level to finally an international level, thanks to a broad vision to support the national ecosystem of the sector.”
With the participation of Roberto Viola, Director General of DG Connect at the European Commission, the event was part of an international and European agenda. Roberto Viola emphasised that it is essential to support “great European champions in technology” so that they can compete in global markets.
Then, José Capmany, Professor of Photonics at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and co-founder of iPronics, stated that “photonics is crucial to enhance semiconductor performance and energy efficiency.”
Furthermore, he announced that Málaga will be hosting the European Conference on Optical Communication in 2026, which will be held at the conference centre Palacio de Ferias y Congresos (FYCMA). This conference’s last edition in Spain was celebrated in Valencia in 2015. This European event will strengthen the cooperation between Innova IRV and Valencia Silicon Cluster.
The round table conference focused on topics such as advanced communications, covering from aerospace and quantum systems to digital health and artificial intelligence. The panel of experts was composed of José Antonio González, Digital Business manager at Telefónica Spain; José Carlos Pérez, South region manager at Orange; Jesús Amores, head of Vodafone Málaga Innovation Hub; and Mari Carmen Aguayo, director of the TELMA Institute (Telecommunications Research Institute of the University of Málaga).
Antonio Gómez-Guillamón, CEO of AERTEC and vice president of Innova IRV, brought the event to a close, thanking all the speakers and participants for exploring “such an interesting topic at the Innoday event.”
The INNO-DAY events are supported by AMETIC, aiming to become a regular meeting in order to shape new ideas and projects within the areas of work of Innova IRV. As a result of this annual cycle, Innova IRV will talk with collaborators and participants to create its Co-creation Hub in 2024, identifying and promoting major flagship initiatives.
