Joint step of UMA and INNOVA IRV towards co-innovation in AI

The Accenture facilities at Málaga TechPark hosted a strategic working meeting yesterday between the University of Málaga, through its Innovation and Technology Cooperation Office (UMA innTech), and the Fundación Instituto Ricardo Valle de Innovación (INNOVA IRV), aiming to advance the creation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Co-Innovation Lab.
The meeting brought together around twenty researchers from the University of Málaga, including representatives who will participate in the AMETIC Artificial Intelligence Commission, as well as other research groups with an active background in applied AI research. The goal of this co-innovation initiative is to establish a collaborative space where science, technology, and the business environment converge to tackle the major AI challenges from an interdisciplinary and applied perspective.
The session was opened by Javier López, the Rector’s Delegate for Technological Innovation, who provided context for the initiative within the relationship between UMA and INNOVA IRV, and outlined the main objectives and challenges of establishing the lab. Next, Toni de la Prieta, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence at INNOVA IRV and Director of the Advanced Technologies Center at Accenture, presented various collaborative projects in which UMA’s research groups could participate, highlighting their potential real-world impact on industry. Finally, Manuel Blázquez, also representing INNOVA IRV, shared upcoming project calls related to artificial intelligence and its transformative potential.

After the presentations, a participatory dialogue space was created where professors and researchers could resolve doubts, raise concerns, and clarify possible collaboration avenues within the framework of the lab. The exchange of perspectives highlighted both the diversity of approaches and the high scientific and technological potential present within UMA’s research community.
This meeting marks a new step toward consolidating Málaga as a reference environment for technological innovation, particularly in the responsible and strategic development of Artificial Intelligence. The AI Co-Innovation Lab is envisioned as an open space for public-private collaboration, the promotion of local talent, and the generation of solutions aligned with current and future challenges.
