To promote research and development in the space sector. It also seeks to accelerate space commercialisation and foster innovation through collaboration between academia, industry and investors.
A market-oriented space innovation centre
ESA Phi-Lab NET Spain is a competence centre promoted within the European ESA Phi-LabNET network, based in Barcelona and coordinated by the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC). Its main objective is to accelerate the commercialisation of space technologies by connecting research, industry, startups, companies and investors.
The project seeks to transform scientific and technological advances into real, scalable solutions with commercial impact, strengthening the role of the space sector as a driver of innovation, competitiveness and economic development.
Space technology supporting climate resilience
The core focus of ESA Phi-Lab NET Spain is the development of space-based solutions that help improve resilience to climate change.
Its initiatives address both climate mitigation and adaptation, supporting solutions that help societies, territories and ecosystems anticipate, prepare for and respond more effectively to environmental impacts. Its areas of interest include Earth observation, telecommunications, navigation, crisis management, the prediction of extreme weather events and the use of space data for
decision-making.
Support for projects, companies and innovative organisations
ESA Phi-Lab NET Spain supports innovative projects through seed funding, access to specialised infrastructure, technical advice, business support, intellectual property management, research mentoring and connection with European space-sector networks.
The programme is open to companies, startups, research centres, universities and institutions developing solutions with technological, commercial and social potential. Its purpose is to bridge the gap between research and the market, helping high-potential ideas become real products, services or applications.
A collaborative ecosystem with international reach
The project is supported by a network of partners made up of research organisations, universities, industry players and organisations specialised in innovation and technology transfer. This combination makes it possible to cover the full space value chain, from scientific research and technological development to validation, commercialisation and deployment of solutions.
ESA Phi-Lab NET Spain is part of a wider European ecosystem connected to the European Space Agency, the ESA ScaleUp Programme and the ESA Commercialisation Gateway. Thanks to this international dimension, the project contributes to positioning Spain as a relevant player in space innovation applied to the climate, industrial and social challenges of the future.
